Making the most of your storage space

Packing a storage unit is simple with a little planning. By following these tips, you’ll make the most of your rented space, keep your belongings safe and may even save money by needing less room than expected.

How to pack your unit efficiently

Before moving items into storage, make a list or take photos of everything. This helps with insurance claims and acts as a reference.
Pack as much as possible into strong, uniform boxes to make stacking easier and to maximise vertical space.
When you arrive, unload your goods at the loading bay and use the available trolleys. Don’t overload or stack unsafely.
Lay down a dust sheet to protect your belongings.
Place heavy or bulky items first at the back. Keep aside anything you’ll need to access regularly.
Store frequently used items at the front of the unit. If you’ll need regular access to most items, leave a walkway.
Label boxes clearly, especially fragile items, with labels facing outwards.
Stand sofas and mattresses on end, and stack chairs seat-to-seat to save space.
Stack boxes methodically from back to front, filling gaps with smaller items.
Raise boxes off the floor with pallets if possible for extra protection.
Use hollow spaces inside wardrobes, drawers, laundry baskets or suitcases to store linens, clothes or pillows.
Cover sharp tools and oil blades lightly to avoid damage and accidents. Clean outdoor equipment before storage.
Once packed, cover everything with a dust sheet to keep it clean.
Secure your unit with a heavy-duty, insurance-approved padlock, available in-store.
